EXCUSE ME?
I really didn't believe her until I saw {this} blog post and I had to read it over a couple of times before I decided it was legit! All of a sudden this chaise nestled in the corner of my garage stood at attention in my mind.
I was working up the nerve to re-upholster it (coral peacocks just aren't my thing) and then I thought..... what do I have to lose? So I bought all the supplies needed and enlisted the help of my right hand girl, G.
I got a quart of oops paint for $2.50 at Lowe's and mixed it together with a subtle pink and white latex paint I had in my stash. Then I mixed it with textile medium (the secret weapon) and water. Here's the chair after the first coat of paint. Looking better already.
We let it dry completely and then painted a second coat using a foam roller for the big areas, and a small paint brush for the welt and the harder to reach areas.
I know what you're thinking, "What the heck does it feel like?" Honestly, it's a little like outdoor fabric. Not completely stiff, yet not super-duper comfy. I don't think I'd put it in my family room, but it's perfect for a corner in my bedroom and for the price, I'm overjoyed.
In honor of my new chaise, I decided to make my bed and take a few more pictures of our master bedroom. Bless my husband's heart for letting me fulfill my French Country fantasy. He's sweet and easy going....obviously.
I'm obsessed with our iron bed. I found it while junkin a few years ago, and it was love at first sight. It almost didn't make it into our bedroom because of it's stature, but I said a prayer, and it was answered.
I found matching chandeliers at a flea market and hung them on either side of the bed. I also found two different chests on CL and used them as nightstands for extra storage. The tall mirrors on each side of our bed are leaned up against two vertical windows that face the side of my neighbors house. Not exactly what I want to see first thing in the morning, so I put black out lining in them and covered them with mirrors.
I adore our layered bed skirt. I found the velvet in the LA district for 3 bucks a yard and found someone to sew it for $25. I'll probably be buried in it.
Although you won't catch me bungey jumping or sky diving, I took a big risk yesterday, which gets me thinking......do you think Lowe's has the perfect golden brown oops paint? Maybe I will get a tan this summer!
OMG this is unbelievable!
ReplyDeleteI love your bed! So amazing! Does that guy on your dresser freak you out when you wake up?
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for mentioning my chair! I have a ton more info and examples on my blog if anyone is interested. I just did a simple tutorial on Emily's blog. ReplyDeleteThis turned out amazing. It totally looks like new upholstery. That was a great inexpensive solution. Love your bed.
ReplyDeletelove the new look very cool
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get that flower pillow on the chaise? I'm in love!
ReplyDeleteThis is SO gorgeous. I could take a vacation in this bedroom! Great job. I found you from Hyphen Interiors and I'm your newest follower!
ReplyDeleteI love how the chaise turned out. Its inspired me to paint the small settee that lives in the sitting area of my bedroom. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteJust a heads up - mentioned your fab chaise again on my blog today! http://www.hypheninteriors.com/2011/09/all-in-one-spot.html
ReplyDeleteThis is GORG!!! I've been thinking about doing this forever! You sold me! What does it feel like!?!? It looks amazing!

Beautiful chaise! I'm so glad you tried painting it. How is it holding up? I have a wing chair I'm going to try painting on Saturday. My first attempt. We'll see how it goes! LOVE the bed! And the mirrors in front of the windows is such a great idea! Thanks for sharing! ~~Rhonda
ReplyDeleteI love how elegant it looks now. You were featured today. Come by and grab a button.
ReplyDeleteSo did you not use any acrylic paint like the post from Hyphen did? I am wanting to do this to a few chairs this weekend and I am trying to decide latex or acrylic?? HELP
ReplyDeleteKristin, I actually used a mixture of acrylic and latex paint. I don't think it matters what kinda of paint you use, the important part is the textile medium and making sure your fabric is damp before you paint it. Good luck!

Beautiful bed -- lucky find. It looks like it was custom fabricated possibly from an iron fence. Anyway, fabulous!
ReplyDeleteYour chaise intrigues me. I have a leather bergere and ottoman which together look like a chaise. Since I don't want leather in the bedroom, I have slipcovered it, which I was taught never to do in design school years ago. I am trying to work up the nerve to paint the burgundy leather. Has anyone tried painting leather?
I found you via hypeninteriors.
There are ton of paints for painting leather. I believe it's way easier than fabric. Good luck!
DeleteI haven't painted leather before, I'd LOVE you to be the first!
ReplyDeleteYou'll definitely need to give us some feedback when you try it.
JUST DO IT!
xo,
Mia
Hello lovely, I was just wondering how this baby was holding up? Any wear and tear issues?
ReplyDeletexo Becca
Hi Becca, holding up just beautifly. Of course it's in the corner of my master and she doesn't get a ton of use, but still looking lovely as ever.

Please anwser me dear!!
ReplyDeleteHow much fabric medium do I add to the paint? Is it half and half?
You actually mixed latex and acrylic paint? both pink????
Thxxxxxxxxx
Hi! I used a 1:1 ratio of latex paint and fabric medium and skipped the acrylic paint step.
DeleteThanks for reading.
Mia
although I am a "little" late to this post, I just had to comment. Was browsing around on google on painting upholstery when I found your blog. Your piece turned out beautifully and I am so going to try this on a vintage Louis VI like chair I found. Actually, I found 2. I re upholstered one that I just loved but it was hard for me to do and very time consuming so after reading your post I will just paint the 2nd one (and putting it in my booth). Absolutely adore your blog and will visit often. Best Wishes, Lynn
ReplyDeleteP.S. I forgot to say your bedroom is gorgeous and I want that headboard!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to let you and your readers know that I posted your chair on my page with examples of painted upholstery! I linked right to you so they could find more information on your blog. Hope you don't mind.

Very nice. I have been thinking about 2 chairs. Maybe I will try this. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous chaise!!! I am so impressed, thank you so much for sharing this!!
ReplyDeleteHi! I am amazed how well the light color covered that hideous bright fabric! I have a victorian settee I've been wanting to paint but since I want to paint it black I'm worried about the paint coming off on clothing. You used a light color so I don't know if you've noticed this happening? Or do you know of any kind of top coat that will help protect clothing from the paint, and won't make the fabric hard or crunchy??
