Remember when we posted our March {give-away}? A fun filled day with us, full of treasure hunting, laughing, and food? Yes, you missed out, unless your name was Mary! Last Thursday, April 12th was the highly anticipated date, and it went a little something like this.....
Mary and her husband Jim pulled into my driveway around 8:30 a.m. They had driven to Arizona from Orange County, California (a six hour drive!) and had spent the previous night at a nearby hotel. Mary really wanted to see the {industrial workbench} up close and personal. Judging from the pictures and measurements that were taken, Jim will be whipping up a precise replica this weekend.
Mary assured us that Jim was absolutely delightful, and would be happy to traipse around the city with us all day long. Mia and I can definitely get behind a man that loves to shop, so we didn't object one little bit. And so we set off around 9:00 a.m. with a bucket list of stops for the day. We were planning on meeting up with Lindsey of {Better After} when we got into Phoenix, but unfortunately she had been up all night with a very sick little girl and couldn't come. Although we were all bummed, we put on our happy faces and decided to set out.
The first place we stopped was {Merchant Square} in Chandler, a mecca of treasures. There are hundreds of vendors who pack their spaces with everything from A to Z. We each found a thing or two to to call our own, and it was a great place to start the day. From there, we hit St. Vincent de Paul, Goodwill, SAS, and Gracie's Thrift to name a few before we needed to refuel. We decided on Zoe's Kitchen for lunch and loved it. Mia and I had been before, and we knew it would not disappoint. They serve relatively light fare which was perfect for shoppers like us because we didn't want to go into a food coma. We were on a mission!
Jim surprised the two of us with containers of the delicious Greek dressing from Zoe's when we got back into the car. It's so good! And speaking of Jim, he was an absolute gem the whole day. He held our doors, held our stuff, and held us to the time limits we set for ourselves at every stop. He had a smile on his face the whole day and was the perfect gentleman. Just look how adorable he is inside this Airstream at one of our very favorite spots, Rust and Roses.
If you live in the Phoenix area, Rust and Roses is a place you MUST visit if you haven't already. Shelly has an amazing sense of style and fills her store with the most unique and incredible finds. She shops year round, all across the country, and brings her finds right back to this desert we call home. We have purchased so many great things from her over the years, and her store is definitely one of our favorite places to go. Mary collects old office items, and was super excited to find a vintage seal press.
Let's talk about darling Mary. She was beyond gracious, complimentary, and polite. She was so interested in us and has been sweet enough to read every one of our blog posts! We talked about everything from raising kids to recipes. She was a wealth of knowledge and had a heartfelt answer to every question we asked her. She is a seasoned flea market shopper, as well as a curb-side trash collector and seamstress. We had so much in common with her and really wished we could have spent at least one more day together. She had our mouths watering over her recipe for apricot scones, and our eyes transfixed on the pictures of her yard in California. She was just delightful in every single way!
We pretty much cleaned Phoenix out over the next few hours and once it started getting dark, we were forced to call it a day. When we pulled back into my driveway it was 7:00 p.m. Here we are with some of our loot.
Right after we posted the giveaway, we started getting a little bit nervous about what we'd done. What if the winner was boring? What if she found us annoying? What if we had completely different tastes? What we did was definitely a crap shoot, but in the end, it proved to be simply magical. Thank you Jim and Mary for a beautiful experience that will not soon be forgotten. We definitely feel like the big winners after having been able to spend the day with the two of you!
Gotta love a happy ending.

on a different note...
It had been a while since Jilly and I spent a good solid day Junkin'.
The weather in AZ is absolute perfection this time of year and we each had 20 bucks burnin' a hole in our pockets (well at least that's what we told our husbands). So we called up our friend, G, who is always ready for a party and set out for another adventure.
We started at the "Mother Ship" Home Fabrics on Cactus and the 51 where I found two fabrics to start a bedroom upstairs for $3 a yard. Cha-Ching!
I had a little left over fabric from a client I thought I could work into shams and then I added the two new fabrics I'll make into a duvet and window treatments.
We headed up the road to an Antique Mall where we hit places like Everything Goes and Not Too Shabby. I scored this set of 24, colorful dishes for $20. They reminded me of some I saw at Anthro a few days ago but they were $14 a piece. A great find! The piece of coral was $12.
Jilly bought a vintage frame for her entry and G scored a little end table for 15 bucks.
There were amazing things as far as the eye could see. Check out this crazy gold, cherub mirror I insisted Jilly snap a picture of. Have you ever seen the likes!
We all found treasures that would have made our grannies proud, and then asked our new friend, Nancy, (who happens to own Everything Goes) where a couple of hungry girls might enjoy eating in the neighborhood. She couldn't say enough good things about the Market Bistro down the street. Done.
please excuse the crappy cell phone pics
Me and Jilly shared a twist on the traditional cobb salad which included fresh lettuce, chopped egg, roasted potatoes, sun dried tomatoes, bacon, and black mustard seed ranch. YUMMO!
We also shared the daily special: a grilled chicken sandwich on fresh bread, loaded with whole green chilies, smothered in rich BBQ sauce.
As if that wasn't enough, we each had a slice of their signature pesto pizza with pine nuts, diced tomato, chicken, mozzarella, parmesan and goat cheese topped with argula. Needless to say, we enjoyed the place. Way too full for dessert which only gave us a good reason to go back!

Then off to SAS to grab some more fabric and trim to finish off {my little chair make over} and then every Salvation Army, Savers, Good Will, or Gracie's Thrift we found the whole way home.
I nabbed this small scaled night stand for $30 at Gracie's and got a little bonus thrown in for free, 300 zoo animal stickers all over the front and sides. Aren't children just cute?
If I was going for mother of the year I might have left them on, but I've decided to give someone else a chance. Thank the heavens for Goo Gone. Love this stuff!
By the end of the day my treasures included a bright turquoise decorative bowl, a pair of shorts, a little pair of antlers, a hoard of fabric, 15 yards of trim, a stack of plates, a piece of coral, a night stand, a little silver clock, and a very full tummy.
Here are a list of some places we enjoyed on our day out.

flea market style
I've been out of town this past week (note the absence of any blogging) and it's because me and my lovin' man celebrated our wedding anniversary shacked up in a little condo on Newport Beach.
It's hard to imagine that 16 years ago (at the tender age of 20) I made the most important decision of my life. But you know what? I got it right.
It was a glorious 5 days taking walks on the beach, reading books like {THIS} .....

(I picked this up at Anthro for my lover on Valentine's Day last year. I highly recommend)

We sipped hot chocolate by the fire, watched the surfers, ate at local diners and dives, and hit up every Good Will we could find, getting deals like this...

stack of robins egg saucers for $6 at Salvation Army thrift.
I love Todd because he is really funny, he is always helping someone, it's really hard to make him mad, he's completely checked in as a dad, and he works so hard to provide for our family.

But perhaps the biggest score is the fact that he'll go along with my absurd ideas when I say..."Hey babe, let's spend the day at a FLEA MARKET!"
So while in Cali, we spent a magnificent day browsing around Pasadena hunting for deals.

It's one of my all time favorite things to do and my honey was along for the ride.
Don't worry, he was rewarded handsomely.
I snapped a few pics of some fun things this place has to offer.
Say hello to my new friend Alejandro.
Somebody grabbed this Duncan Phyfe buffet for $50. Trust me, I tried to talk Todd into strapping it to the top of our car, to no avail. Dang it!
It's just row after row of misc treasures. We spent 5 hours there and only got through 1/3 of it. My favorite part is the antique section where you'll find anything from this.......
to this........YIKES!
By 2:00pm all the sellers want to pack up and go home so they're ready to play my favorite game.....LET'S MAKE A DEAL!

....and you never know who you might run into.

The last day in CA, we flew Brody there to meet up with us at a theme park.
On the way home we were driving down the street and he saw a surf board in the dumpster. He insisted we stop and fasten it to the roof of the car.

I pledge never to do Botox.
Heidi Klum was there with her kids and a camera crew. I told her I love her TV show, Design Star, and then I asked her if it was too late to start my Victoria's Secret modeling career.
She looked confused.

There was never a mother so proud.
Such a fun trip.
I love you babe! Here's to 16 more years together (at least).
